Cutting with the aid of a laser beam is a thermal cutting process that is used primarily with plate-shaped materials. It enables precise and fast processing, even in the case of complex outlines and low minimum batch sizes.


In laser cutting, the focused laser beam is absorbed at the front of the kerf, applying the energy required for cutting. At the same time, gas protects the focusing optics against vapors and spatter, and removes debris from the kerf.

2 – SOFT MATERIALS

Todays advanced 7Axis milling technology coupled with state of the art Computer Aided Manufacturing software have replaced the old-age techniques for enlarging and reducing sculptures. 3D Artec Eva scanner and Delcam Powermill software model representing your sculpture is imported into Computer software. That software is then used to create complex multi-axis “toolpaths,” paths by which the cutting head of our DigiRob Engraver will move and mill away material from a block to create your sculpture.
Due to the fact that our milling system has 7-Axes complex shapes can be milled in a variety of materials like wood, foam, ice, chocolate ranging from small to monumental size.

3 – Stone

Modern Stone Sculpting Method

Milling begins with roughing and ends with finishing. The 1st roughing pass is generally done with a saw blade. The saw cuts to depth outside your model surface. Slices are made into the stone approx. every 20 mm and knocked off by a hammer. This leaves a very rough surface. In some instances a Diamond core drill will be used to remove large amounts of material in a similar way. A 2nd roughing pass is done with a large diamond tool about the size of hockey puck. Again the pass cuts to a depth a few mm from the sculpture’s final surface. Then smaller tools are successively used to mill away the remaining stone. Tools can only cut to certain depth depending on their size, because of the high loads required to mill stone. The smaller the tip of the tool the less material it is physically able to remove and the slower the machine must work.

Types of Stone

Stone comes in many different varieties, giving artists plenty of choice in respect of color, quality and hardness. The hardest and most weatherproof stone is igneous rock, formed by the cooling of molten rock, such as granite, diorite and basalt. Sedimentary stones like alabaster (gypsum) may also be used, although they contain noticeable strata. Metamorphic stones, formed by changes to igneous and sedimentary rock caused by extreme temperature or pressure, are very popular with sculptors: the best example being the different types of marble.Soapstone, with a MOHS hardness of about 2, is one of the easiest stones to work. Next, comes Alabaster, and softer kinds of serpentine, all with a MOHS value of about 3. Stones that have a value of 4 include Limestone and sandstone. Harder stone, with a MOHS value of 6, includes travertine, marble, and onyx, with granite and ultimately basalt (both 8) being the most durable but the most difficult to carve manually with usage of DigiRobWaterjetyou can create a masterpiece with any type of stone.
